Crimean water

First of all from the lack of water could be affected animals and unique natural environment of the Crimea

Systematic threats from the Kiev authorities to block the supply of the Crimea recently received another practical embodiment. Lacking real political tools to influence Russia who went to the Crimea, the current government is trying to exert pressure through the mechanisms of supply of the Crimea, which is still significantly tied to the mainland Ukraine.

The first attempt to put pressure on the Crimean place in March, when there was a reduction in the supply of electricity in the Crimea, which led to rolling blackouts in Simferopol, Sevastopol, Yalta, Kerch and Yalta. But the problem was generally resolved when the peninsula was transferred mobile power generating capacity remaining after the Olympic Games in Sochi. Question closed local stationary power plant to be built in a planned manner over the next one to two years.

North Crimean Canal, which the USSR had built for irrigation of arid lands of the Crimean Peninsula, Ukraine for some reason decided to monopolize

With the water situation for the Crimean more complicated. Since Soviet times, the peninsula was based on water North Crimean Canal, which provides up to 80% of the needs of the Crimea in the water. North Crimean Canal was one of the largest infrastructural projects of the Soviet Union, which had invested huge amounts of money and labor of the peoples of the USSR. The scope of the project is well demonstrated its basic parameters.

The main water intake placed on the Kakhovka reservoir, where water is gravity fed through the Perekop Isthmus to a distance of 208 km to the pump station number 1 under Jankoi (lifting height - 9 m 2).

Second samotёchny 79 km long section between 208 and 287 km, supplies water to the pumping station number 2 (lifting height 25, 6 m).

Third samotёchny land 82 km long (from 287 to 369 km) ends with a pumping station number 3, from which the water of penstocks with a diameter of 1800 mm and a length of 322 m is supplied to the pumping station № 4.

The pressure area 30-kilometer water pipeline (diameter 900 and 1200 mm) ends at the water treatment facilities of Kerch.

After the collapse of the USSR, Ukraine, together with the peninsula received and the channel, which now perceives as his own - although ambitious water supply project Crimea is not built for the purpose of monopolizing the supply of water.

Water areas of the peninsula is quite segmented and not all cities of Crimea are directly dependent on the supply of water in the North-Crimean channel. For example, Sevastopol is based on Chernorechenskoye reservoir, which in normal times, the city provides enough - so that even in 2013, the city's leadership planned to completely abandon the Dnieper water.

North Crimean Canal not only supplies water to the North of the Crimea, but also plays a key role in the organization of local agriculture: the climate of the Northern Crimea needs a reclamation system, which depends on water supplied from mainland Ukraine.

Therefore, statements by officials on the subject of internal investigations relating to reserves in the Crimea in the first place, drinking water, which the Crimea really so hard to provide. Work in this direction will begin in early May. First Deputy Prime Minister Rustam Temirgaliev Crimea has already said that the problem is not so terrible as it seems:

"We raised the archives exploration, when the 70 years studied the underground fresh water reserves in the Crimea, and found quite interesting facts, which were also confirmed by exploration in 2004. Northeast center of the peninsula (Sivash) was rich in fresh water. Previously, production of drinking water exceed 200 thousand cubic meters per day. This will be sufficient to provide the south-eastern part of the peninsula with drinking water, including Feodosia and Kerch. Very important is the fact that these wells will be renewable. The water in these sources, when properly used, is inexhaustible. Therefore, we can safely say that the Crimea is rich in drinking water ».

The first source in the new reality began to develop on April 24-25. For example, in the village of Krinichki near the town of Stary Krym drilled wells to a depth of 9 meters. However, the extracted water is used for irrigation - for drinking, it is not necessary.

But the problem of agriculture, which just leaves a significant portion of the water supplied by the North Crimean channel remains. Due to underground sources can provide only basic consumption on the peninsula, but it is impossible to close the required volume of fresh water in general.

There is one important caveat - the North-Crimean Canal "hanging" not only agriculture of the Crimea, but also agriculture, Kherson region, so the problems of one region will have an identical reflection of both. Crimea gives 62% of rice production in Ukraine, Odessa and Kherson regions - the remaining 38%. In the case of the continuation of the blockade, Ukraine risks losing not only have gone along with the Crimea acreage, but also to destroy what is left on its territory.

If Ukraine does not end the blockade, it risks losing Kherson region

Kiev is forced to do so because the desperate need of some trump card in the fight for our future - so the cost to Kherson and difficulties Ukrainian citizens remaining in the Crimea, he does not care. Now the junta is a simple goal - to create the problem of simulating a humanitarian catastrophe, to "change" its subsequent haggling about the future of Ukraine. Since the complete coverage of water can lead to serious charges, "water block" is yet partial - in the Crimea on the channel receives about 5% of the volume of water that was up to the coup in Ukraine and Crimea branch. On April 28 at the necessary volume of 80 cubic meters per second it was noted only 4 cubic meters of water per second.

Kiev is trying to write off the problem of water on the incompetence of the Crimean workers in Krasnoperekopsk

All attempts to legally register the leadership of Crimea water supply hampered by political blockade. Temirgaliev openly stated that the Crimea is ready to pay for water at world prices: "We are ready to pay for water according to international standards. Although international practice and the law says you have to charge for the transportation of drinking water, not the water itself ».

In March and April, the leadership of the Crimea 4 times in Kiev sent a package of documents, but they are blocked through State Water Management Committee of Ukraine, which oversees Vasily Stashuk. In the framework of the methods of Goebbels's propaganda in a number of Ukrainian media were made persistent attempts to introduce a radical reduction in water supply as a result of the incompetence of the Crimea Crimean experts who allegedly violated the technology of operation of the pumping station in Krasnoperekopsk, which led to a reduction in the supply of water through the Crimean channel. But as the witnesses in Krasnoperekopsk, pumping station there is operating normally, and the water level is reduced, because water is reset from the channel to the Black Sea.

Therefore, although the Crimean government to solve the problem of drinking water looks very optimistic, representatives of the agricultural sector of the Crimea is quite skeptical about the possible effects of "water blockade." That common opinion:

- We do not take charge. If it was free - another question. But we pay. What is the attitude ?! Without water in these areas will not survive no culture. And corn, soybeans and wheat - it is also animal feed. Breeding Farm here created a quarter century. Under the knife, and there is no alternative. This is one stage, and there is more - 400 goals, and even the young - 1100-1200. But the farm that provides us the whole department, 70 houses. All the people working here, and where people go? Peter Kalyn. Director of the Crimean agribusiness

- North Crimean Canal has always been to Old Crimea's main waterway. We have a major shortage of water for more than a decade. From the tap water is on schedule in winter more often in the summer there is once a week. But with the beginning of April, it is not at all. To wash or bathe, the well is better to go in the morning, 5 o'clock in the afternoon chance to get away with a full bucket already little. Tolstova Lyudmila. A resident of Old Crimea

- This is a disaster! Farmers say it is with tears. Men can not cry, but I've seen agronomists, and I was the creeps when I saw footage of a dry canal bed, and fields - even just 2-3 weeks and just dry. Crazy people on the cost of crop turn to ashes. Scheglikov Denis. Employee hothouse

- We have processed and prepared the ground for rice, but the water never seen, and we can not sow rice. Romanchenko Sergei. The director of the agricultural enterprise

Official Russian sources indicate is only possible solutions, but do not give a clear answer to the question of how to be restored a full supply of Crimea.

According to the Minister of Agriculture of Russia Nikolai Fyodorov, now there is a search for alternative sources of irrigation areas: Explore the possibility of using underground water, have costly option of desalination of seawater, in a project the construction of a bridge across the Kerch Strait will be provided for the construction of a thread running water from the Kuban. However, to completely solve the water supply problems of the Crimea will be not earlier than in 2-3 years.

Crimean agriculture has become hostage to politics. And if the current situation, we can expect that some of the products in the Crimea rise seriously, some agricultural enterprises will be ruined, and the use of water will be introduced limits.

Already, plans Crimean government - introduction of economical distribution system of the Crimean water supplies for agriculture. All the same Temirgaliev already voiced perspective: "We will start this autumn installation of drip irrigation. This system is an economical water consumption, which will also improve the efficiency of agricultural production ».

Of course, all this takes time and money, so that farmers in any case, the light losses that, if the solution to the issue drags on, may become economically significant for the whole of the Crimea.

In another scenario, the Kiev government, trading with Russia will be forced to exchange this issue on gas prices and the recognition of their own legitimacy.

This is the full version of the scrapping of the Ukrainian state, when the Kherson region, plays a key role in water supply of the Crimea, it may be either an unrecognized state, or become part of Russia. Therefore, the problem of "water blockade" is more short-term nature.
