Makoko - floating slum in Nigeria
Makoko slums are located in the lagoon of the Atlantic Ocean, right on the background of multi-storey modern building of the Nigerian city of Lagos. Lagos - the largest in terms of population, industrial capacity and financial flows of the city.
In Makoko is home to tens of thousands of people. Accurate census is never carried out. However, it is estimated that the number of people here ranges from 150 to 250 thousand people.
Previously, it was Makoko fishing village, which is about a century ago established immigrants from neighboring Benin. Today, the slum population are workers-migrants from across West Africa.
Houses are on wooden stilts. Each lives of six to ten people.
Toilets are shared by several households. Naturally, most of the garbage and waste is in the Atlantic Ocean.
The government is developing a program of resettlement of Makoko. On the territory of the slums will soon be the first floating school.
