Massive water column catches neutrinos!

Just stunner Super-Kamiokande represents a huge underground tank (cylinder diameter 39 and height 41 m) filled with 50 thousand tons of ultrapure water. On the walls of the reservoir with 11 thousand photomultipliers, "browsing" the entire volume of water and recording the Cherenkov radiation particles. A large stratum of soil over the installation protects it from cosmic-ray background, so that the volume setting occur only rare events of which the most interesting are those that caused by the sun or by atmospheric neutrinos. The research program also search for proton decay, the registration of neutrinos from supernovae appealing, accelerator and astrophysical neutrinos.
