Pain, encased in stone!

Franz Xaver Messerschmidt (1736-1783) was a German-Austrian artist. In 1774 he was forced to leave the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts because of his illness. He had Crohn's disease. In 1781 he created a series of sculptures, nature has served his own face during wild attacks of pain that felt sick. So people turned their pain into art, and in some way defeated the disease.
