Wellcome Image Award 2014. Stunning scientific photo
The prestigious annual award Wellcome Image Award is dedicated to the best scientific photography in the world. I offer you a selection of the best photos of the award and of course the winner of the photo. Images of winners will be presented in four major research institutions of the UK, as well as the headquarters of the Wellcome Trust in London.
A sample of agricultural residue
At the same time the exhibition will be held at Glasgow Science Centre, the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) in Manchester, Techniquest in Cardiff and W5 in Belfast.
Zebrafish embryo
The nerve fibers of the brain of healthy adult MRI
Head louse egg on the tip of the hair, SEM
Kidney stone, SEM
Flower rezuhovitki Tal, SEM
Breast cancer cells under the influence of drugs nanoscale
Tick the foot
The lower jaw of medieval man
Bud lily CIGS
Semiconductors on thin film solar cell
The fabric of the human heart (aortic valve) with signs of calcification
Crystals of oxidized vitamin C (ascorbic acid)
3D-image of a mechanical heart pump, located inside the patient's chest, won the grand prize of scientific images Wellcome Image Awards 2014.
A mechanical heart pump in the chest, DECT
The photo was taken by the Swedish scientist Anders Persson (Anders Persson) using a new type of scanner called "dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) angiography." The patient is scanned using two X-ray sources with different power. Then the digital transformation in three dimensions, the image can be rotated, to crush and to increase the interest of clarity.
Fergus Walsh (Fergus Walsh), a medical correspondent for BBC: "3D-image Anders Persson with mechanical heart in a man's chest is really stunning. The juxtaposition of gentle human anatomy and reliable mechanical components are so bright that it seems as if the image comes to life today.
This year, the images are not only perfectly executed technically, but also visually impressive. Before, I did not know that kidney stones or nits can be so beautiful. Wellcome Image Awards gives us a new perspective on things. "
