Lakes of Ounianga - system of lakes in the middle of the Sahara Desert

These eighteen lakes are located in one of the driest places on the planet, and their total area is about 628 square kilometers. Location reservoirs, allows you to see incredibly contrasting landscapes.

This system of lakes located in the Republic of Chad, near the Ennedi, and around it - the endless sands. The system includes not only freshwater, but also salted and over-salted. All the lakes exist because recharge groundwater sources. Despite the unifying name of the "system", it is divided into two groups, separated by a distance of about forty kilometers. Ounianga Kébir includes four salt lakes, the salt concentration is so high that their waters are able to live only a few species of microorganisms and algae. But the 14-Lakes Lakes of Ounianga Serir group, mostly freshwater. Due to the fact that the lion's share of surface water bodies covered with reeds, it prevents the evaporation of water.
