Of course, the most famous and iconic diamond is considered the "Cullinan" or "Star of Africa", accidentally discovered in South Africa back in 1905. The exact weight of the diamond - 3106, 75 carat, which is equal to 621, 35 grams (100h65h50 mm). Moreover, the "Cullinan" is a piece of a larger crystal, which was never found. After processing, "Cullinan" was divided into 9 parts, the two largest of which, called "Great Star of Africa" ​​(530, 2 carats) and "Second Star of Africa" ​​(317, 4 carats). First, it adorns the scepter of King George VII, and the second - the crown of the British Empire (just below the ruby).










Incidentally, in the ranking of the world's largest diamonds, the first crystal is listed second, and the second - fourth. In so it looked initially found the diamond.



As you know, "Great Star of Africa", also called "Cullinan I», is not the world's biggest diamond. That status belongs to yellow-brown diamond, called «The Golden Jubilee». Its weight is 545, 67 carats (109, 13 g). Before treatment, the diamond weighed 755 carats 5. He, like the Cullinan, was found in South Africa, however, 80 years later, and now belongs to the King of Thailand.

Prior to cutting, the diamond was the largest among brown diamonds and the fourth largest among all the colors.



The fifth-largest diamond in the world and the largest black diamond became «Spirit of de Grisogono», found in Central Africa. The initial weight - 587 carats (117 g). After treatment, the Swiss jewelers «De Grisogono», began to weigh 312, 24 carats (62, 45 g). It was placed in a ring made of white gold. According to unconfirmed information, the ring had been sold, but its owner is unknown.



The sixth largest diamond is considered to be «The Centenary», which draws on the 273.85 carats (54, 77 g). Weight before treatment - 599 carats (120 g). Discovered in the 80s of the last century, all in the same South Africa. Currently, the owner of the diamond is unknown.



Before finding "Cullinan", the largest diamond found was considered «Excelsior», produced in South Africa in 1893. His initial weight was 971 carats (194, 2 g).
