This tiny Scottish island is almost entirely working on renewables

If you need an example of a real system implementation of renewable energy sources, then you can refer to the Scottish island of Eigg, infrastructure is almost entirely powered by wind, sun and water. The island of 30 square kilometers perfectly demonstrates the potential of renewable energy sources and the ability for remote settlements to fully provide itself with electricity. From around the world on Agg environmentalists come to see the while a unique system of energy consumption.

The power supply system on the island uses a balanced combination of the three sources of energy – sun, wind and waves. This combination allows you to stabilize the power grids, which are powered by three hydraulic units – one large turbine with a capacity of 100 kilowatts and two small capacity 5-6 kW, and wind power generators 6киловатт and 50-kilowatt photovoltaic installation. If necessary, the backup power supply is provided by two 70-kilowatt diesel generators.

On average, renewable energy generates 90-95 percent of the electricity on the island. Storage of excess energy using special batteries. When these batteries are filled – usually this happens in the dead of winter, when a lot of rain and wind – energy is directed for heating of public buildings, so that nothing is wasted.

On the island there are restrictions on the maximum allowable power for private homes, the restriction is set at 5 kilowatts total power total energy consumption, that is, the maximum can simultaneously include an electric kettle and a washing machine. For enterprises the upper limit is 10 kilowatts. For everyone who exceeds this limit, imposed a small fine.

Egg the group came from countries such as Brazil and Malawi to assess how the supply system of the island can be adapted for remote communities that do not have reliable access to the national power grid.published

P. S. And remember, only by changing their consumption — together we change the world! ©
