In 2017, the Colas will build roads out of solar panels on 4 continents

The company Colas SA, part of French industrial group Bouygues SA, has developed to cover the road bands, durable solar panels can withstand the weight of a heavy truck. After five years of research and laboratory tests, the company started construction of test sites and hopes to commercialize the technology in early 2018.

Last month started construction of a km of the test site near the village Turover in Lower Normandy. The road surface of 2,800 m2 of solar panels should generate power 280 kW·h. This is sufficient to provide in the course of the year lighting the streets of a small village with a population of 5,000 people.

Currently the cost of this pavement is quite high. One square meter of solar road costs up to 2500 euros including the cost of packing, monitoring and data collection. Wattway, a division of Colas SA, which is engaged in these technologies, promises to reduce by 2020 the cost of such road to the performance of traditional solar farms.

In the near future Wattway plans to build test sites in various regions of the world: in calgary (Canada), in the state of Georgia (USA), Africa, Japan, Europe. The company intends to experience solar coating in different climatic conditions for different types of roads. published
