Christian Steven, a Russian academician, founder and the first Director of the Nikitsky Botanical garden. The garden was established in 1812 near the village of Nikita – hence the name.
In the opinion of the founder of the Nikita garden "Taurian state garden will have in mind a threefold purpose:





1) if possible, a complete collection of all without exception in this climate and able to grow in any kind of economy is useful, or only for decoration of the employees of the trees, shrubs and grasses, to the knowledge of all different kinds on the outside the signs and way;

In the collections of the Nikita Botanical garden has 30 thousand species, varieties and hybrids of plants. Nikitsky garden carries a wide scientific contacts with 550 different institutions from 80 countries.
