City in the rock

It owes its name here once prosperous wine company Setenil de las Bodegas (perevoditsya as of Setenil of the wine cellars). The city is famous all over Andalusia for its houses covered with white paint and the fact that it is built directly inside the rock.

Setenil de Las Bodegas extends along the course of the Rio Trejo, and some of his buildings are located in rock crevices, which were artificially enlarged with the addition of the outer walls.

The modern town of Setenil de Las Bodegas arose from a fortified Moorish town which controlled the road to the Rio Trejo, located to the North-West of Ronda. In the city you can still see the castle, which dates from at least the 12th century, the reign of the Almohads and some believe that there was a city.

The name Setenil de Las Bodegas dates from the 15th century, when new Christian settlers to a thriving olive and almond groves added vineyards. The first two cultures still thrive, and the vineyards, unfortunately, was destroyed by insects in the 1860-ies.
