Comfortable temperature improves memory

Weather and, in particular, the temperature of the environment affect our well-being. But the influence of temperature on cognitive abilities?

It is believed that the coolness improves the ability to perceive and remember information, as heat reduces. However, research on this topic is scarce. Lorentz Colzato and Robert Sellaro, psychologists from Leiden University (the Netherlands), decided to correct this omission and find out how does temperature affect the ability to memorize.

It turned out that job related to remembering, a person performs best at the temperature that personally he feels more comfortable. Participants broke into two groups. One group preferred the cool air, the other warm. Tests of memory carried out in three different rooms. In the first kept the temperature 25 ° C and 15 ° C in the second and third 20oC. The subjects on the computer screen showed different letters; the task was to determine whether the next letter with the one that was shown two letters before.

The result of the experiment confirmed the effect of temperature on cognitive ability: the subjects coped better with testing in that situation which seemed to them more comfortable. The psychologists conclude that creation of comfortable temperature conditions, its for everyone, should help improve efficiency and productivity.
