The main difference from its predecessors is their ability to be implemented in a transparent polymer, where the capture of solar energy occurs, without prejudice to the light transmission characteristics of the material.

Quantum dots are a special nanocrystals, composed of materials with semiconductor properties. They have already found application in systems of solar panels, laser systems, transistors and LEDs. As noted by Victor Klimov, a leading researcher of the Center for advanced solar Photophysics in Los Alamos, new generation of quantum dots was constructed in a special way. Innovative special property of quantum dots is the possibility of using large area LSCs luminescent solar concentrators.

These chromophores are kind of specific lens which gathers and concentrates sunlight. And since the radiation is collected from a large area, it can significantly increase its output power.
