Ice loss in Antarctica is growing

Three years of observations show that the Antarctic ice sheet is currently losing 159 billion tons of ice each year — twice as much as when it was recorded in the past.

A team of scientists of the Centre for polar observation and modelling (UK), led by researchers from the University of Leeds, have produced the first complete assessment of changes in the ice cover of Antarctica from a height.

They used data from satellites of the European space Agency that have equipment specifically designed for this task. On average, West Antarctica lost 134 gigatonnes of ice, East Antarctica three gigatonnes, and the Antarctic Peninsula 23 gigatons per year in the period from 2010 to 2013. Is a total loss of 159 gigatons per year.

Launched in 2010, CryoSat carries a radar altimeter that can "see" through clouds and in the dark, providing continuous measurements in all fields of Antarctica.
