Israel relies on desalinated drinking water

Israel is one of the most arid corners of the planet, therefore, one of the main problems is the shortage of fresh water. Replenishment of the natural sources is entirely dependent on rainfall in winter, but winter in Israel, alas, are not always rainy. The only solution in this situation – desalination of sea water. Israel is a recognized world leader in the field of desalination of sea water. Currently, approximately 35 % of all drinking water comes from desalination. By 2050 this figure is expected to double.

Recently was launched the Sorek desalination plant, located 15 km South of tel Aviv. The length of the object is equal to six football fields. Before the water from the Mediterranean sea will become drinkable, its pipes with a diameter of 2.5 meters and serves in membrane filters, which remove salt, obtaining at the output of the foam drinking water. The salt component is sent back to the sea.

The performance of the desalination plant – 624000 cubic meters of drinking water per day at very low cost – 300-500 $ per family per year. Over time, increasing the production of desalinated water, part of it will be used for irrigation. In the framework of a single state program in addition to desalination, it is assumed re-use of wastewater.
