Eco-bricks from sand

1300 billion bricks are made worldwide each year. 10% of them made by hand in the coal furnaces that emit 800 tonnes of carbon per year (one and a half pound of each brick). In China and India, where most kilns are already outdated, this is one of the main causes of air pollution.

American architect Ginger Krieg Dosier has found a way to make bricks without vypekanii in a furnace, and with the help of bacteria. For her work, she received this year first place in the category One Design Fix For The Future at the prestigious competition. All the feature of the manufacturing process is that the sand is added to the non-pathogenic bacteria for the selection of calcite, and then the loose sand is converted into solid brick, with some properties inherent in the Sandstone. To make such bricks can be anywhere without the use of electricity, and it is wonderful.

That is, if you wait a week after watering the sand with a solution — get a sturdy brick. One of the judges on this technology, said: "We presented a very simple concept, completely explained by science. This is another proof that there will always be innovation to address major challenges."
