Scientists create environmentally friendly processor of wood

Mankind was one step closer to being totally biodegradable gadgets. After all, scientists from the University of Wisconsin managed to develop the microprocessor that's almost entirely made of wood. Potentially this invention can have a positive impact on the environment, considering how many tens of thousands of tons of electronics is thrown in the trash every year. Who knows, maybe in the future computers will and does consist solely of biodegradable materials.

The researchers published the results of their achievements in the publication Nature Communications. When creating a chip of wood to the University of Wisconsin helped the Laboratory staff of the Department of agricultural products of the United States. A large portion of the microprocessors consists of a "supporting layer", which is the chip itself. This is the non-degradable layer and was replaced by a material called cellulose nanofibril (CNF).

CNF is a flexible material based on wood fiber that is fully biodegradable, which makes the processor much less dangerous for the environment.

"Our microprocessor is so environmentally friendly that you can just leave it on the edge of the forest, and the mushrooms will fully process it into usable fertilizer," says reporters Professor Zhenqiang MA.

One of the problems of wood as a material is its physical expansion due to humidity. This time the team of researchers managed to overcome thanks to the special epoxy glaze covering the substrate of the chip. As a result, the team got a brand "green chip", which is inexpensive to manufacture and much less toxic to the environment than the counterparts used in modern electronics.

Maybe one day we will see fully wooden gadgets for those who especially protects the environment and the purity of nature.published
