The Nobel prize in medicine awarded to scientists for the fight against worms-parasites and malaria

The Nobel prize in medicine in 2015 was William Campbell (William C. Campbell), Satoshi Omura (Satoshi Ōmura) for discoveries in the fight against worms-parasites, Yu Tu (Tu Youyou) for discoveries in the field of malaria control.



Campbell and Omura discovered a new class of drugs based on metabolic products of fungi Streptomyces avermitilis to fight infections, which carry parasitic worms. Scientists have reduced the incidence of onchocerciasis — river blindness, and elephantiasis — white disease. The team will receive half of the prize.

Chinese Yu learned That an extract of herbs of Artemisia annua, called artemisinin. Extract reduces mortality from malaria.

The Nobel Committee notes that these discoveries give the opportunity to mankind to deal with these diseases, each year affecting millions of people. "The consequences from the point of view of improving the health of people and reducing suffering is immeasurable," write in a press release.

On 6 October, the Nobel Committee will announce the winners of the prize in physics, and the award Ceremony will take place in Stockholm on 10 December 2015. The size of the award — 953 thousands of dollars, Interfax reported.
