Ford promises to make plastic from CO2

Because the conditions of emissions regulations are becoming tougher, much attention is paid to creating more efficient engines, but the engines are not the only part of the car harmful to the environment.

Plastics and foam are located throughout the cabin of the car, produces no less dirty waste, so Ford is trying to solve this problem by using foam and plastic components on the basis of the collected CO2.

Fifty percent of the polyol in new foam Ford made on the basis of CO2, which means that in their production are used in two times less oil.

The company plans to use the foam in the seats and under the hood of their cars, and in doing so, in the words of the giant from Detroit, the company can save up to 272 million kg of oil per year.

Currently, foam is tested to make sure it can withstand the rigours of use by the consumer.

The project runs from 2013 and includes vendors like Novomer from new York, which uses CO2 captured from existing plants, to create polymers used in the foams and plastics.

"Ford is working aggressively to reduce their impact on the environment by reducing the use of plastic and foam is petroleum-based," said Debbie Milewski (Debbie Mielewski), senior technical Manager, division of sustainability of Ford.

"This technology is very interesting, because it contributes to the solution of seemingly insurmountable problems of climate change".

According to official information, the company is making plans to use more foam and plastic components on the basis of the collected carbon, thus trying to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. New biomaterials can be integrated into vehicles over the next five years.
