Cheap portable wind turbine from India

In Kerala (South West India) brothers Arun and Anup Georgie is now looking to test his invention, his pride: a small wind turbine, which will be sold at a reasonable price — about 670 euros.

The turbine, which is less than the new iPhone, able to generate three to five kilowatts-hours of electricity per day — enough to power the average home.

Relatively low price, according to the inventors, will make turbine more accessible to local consumers. The only alternative now — imported equipment at a price almost three thousand euros.

"We made this turbine and put it on record low for this country the price — 50,000 rupiah (about 670 euros). We plan to make it available to every person without exception. Our goal was to make a small revolution in the industry: to produce clean energy at a price affordable to ordinary people," says Arun George, CEO of Avant Garde Innovations.

Brothers Georgie plan to attend the seventh Conference on clean energy, which will be held in June in San Francisco (USA).

In recent times, India is becoming an important player in the market of wind energy. This is facilitated by a significant length of coastline (more than seven and a half thousand kilometers) and the high density of the wind, especially on the West coast.

According to the world Council on wind energy, India is in fourth place for total wind capacity after China, USA and Germany.

Despite this, a quarter of all households in the country, especially in rural areas, have no access to electricity. In India also practice frequent power outages.

"With regard to the Indian context, I would say the following: we are developing, we are doing a lot, but not enough, or rather not at full capacity. I think partly because the government provides sufficient support in form of subsidies, and the like. However, in recent years they have started to do that, however, let's say, half-heartedly," — said the expert on wind energy Suresh Kumaresan.

However, wind energy is not all joy. The inhabitants of the South-Eastern state of Tamil Nadu complain of unbearable noise caused by proximity to wind turbines.

"Since they were built near our city, the noise stops. This is a big problem, many people can not sleep because of this. Oh that's okay, because most people are at work. But at night, when other sounds are absent, the noise becomes unbearable. Of course, wind turbines have substantial benefits, but also generate the problem", — complains a local resident.

According to experts, wind turbines can also pose a threat to local bird population.

"Blades of wind turbines affect migratory birds. Thus annually killed thousands of them. But in our country as in Western countries, nothing is done to properly assess the seriousness of the problem. Especially suffer from this birds that fly in flocks," says ornithologist Rahim Ravatar.

Over the last fifteen years India has increased the production of wind energy at 3300 megawatts. Thus, its total capacity is 26743 MW: this is more than the total wind energy produced in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Last year, more than 70% of electricity in India was based on coal.
