Geothermal power plant at Menengai 400 MW in Kenya will start in July this year

Funding for the construction of a new geothermal power plant in Kenya, worth 500 million USD, is carried out by a group of lenders, key among them which are the AfDB Group, the European investment Bank and the government of Kenya. The project financing includes a loan from the African development Bank.

New geothermal power station in Kenya after the commissioning is expected to cover the needs in electricity for more than 500,000 Kenyan families or 300 000 small businesses.

The project is located in the Eastern sector of the rift valley of Africa, 180 km Northwest of Nairobi and has the potential to increase the installed electric capacity up to 1600 MW, told reporters the representatives of the African development Bank annual meeting among African countries on issues of climate change and energy held in Zambia.Kenya is one of six African countries that has embarked on large-scale use of solar and geothermal energy, which led to the construction of more than 10 GW of new capacity. East African market is a dynamic area for development of renewable energy sources, but still there are large restrictions on large-scale projects, including electric networks require large-scale modernization.

After the launch of the Menengai geothermal power plant with electricity capacity of 400 MW it will be the largest geothermal power plant in the world.

In 2014, Kenya has introduced another major electric power station with capacity of 140 MW worth $ 126 million, and then in the country significantly reduced the cost of electricity for households and businesses. published
