As the Italian "Khrushchev" is converted into energy-efficient housing

Is it possible to transmute "ecomonster" in a clean, comfortable and energy-efficient housing complex? The answer to this question is Yes! And one example can be found in the Italian city of Genoa, in the quarter of social housing, which became a symbol of the economic problems of the second half of the last century and a "landmark" of modern architecture housing.

"The locals call this area "Lavatrici" that is, "the washing machine" because the whole neighborhood really looks like someone put a lot of these items equipped close to each other. All this seems to be a real monster, a monster. Yes, this is the real building the monster" — says a representative of the local community Sergio Pandolfini.

The disadvantages become particularly apparent when it rains. The problem is not only that fills a separate apartment, also gives the Foundation and weaken the walls and pillars. And that can make the local government when the whole country is suffering from economic crisis?

Hope gives people the EU-funded project R2CITIES, which is developing a program of reconstruction and modernization of apartment buildings.

"For quarter "Lavatrici" R2CITIES project provides a real opportunity to be transformed. The reason to implement the modernization, which under other circumstances would be impossible. It is really a good chance!" Says Corrado Conti from the municipality of Genoa.

The aim of the project is to ensure the energy efficiency of the old housing complex, bringing the municipality some losses. First of all, the engineers intend to modernize the Central heating system at home to 162 apartments. Test innovative technologies will be in one of the empty apartments.

"For example, in the Central room, which features our special monitors and sensors to collect data coming from other rooms and areas of the house. For example, the temperature at three different levels in each room, humidity indicators, air speed and air quality, in particular, carbon dioxide, light level, etc.," says project coordinator Renata's Morbiducci from the University of Genoa.

The introduction of new technical systems and individual meters for each room can save up to 50% of energy, says Corrado Conti:

"Each apartment we installed additional devices and the meters of electricity and heat, as well as other measuring devices. By connecting them all to a centralized automatic device, we can regulate the flow of heat and more efficient to calculate the cost of utilities. That is, the electricity supplier can remotely monitor the level of consumption in each house, and set the appropriate bills".

Very soon the inhabitants of the quarter will feel the difference on your own budget, says the Deputy of city Council of Genoa Emanuela the Fracassi:

"I think we've got the local residents do not yet have a clear idea about the "alsotana". However, people understand what to save, i.e. consume less electricity and therefore save money on utility bills".

Well, local resident Sergio Pandolfini, who has lived here more than 20 years, believes that the European project will help to save the whole community:

"These homes need extensive renovation and repair, both structural and inside of the apartments themselves. This is very important because if not done now, the quarter in General may cease to exist, because the home age, and without repair, in the end, you can just fall apart".

Program R2Cities now being tested in three cities: in addition to Genoa, is the Spanish of Valladolid and of the Turkish Besiktas. The plans of the authors of the project – dissemination of positive experience to the whole world. published
