Using the new software, researchers from EPFL analyzed the universe of "Star Wars" by building a map of relationships between the characters, worlds and civilizations . There are about 20 thousand characters and 640 communities were involved within the time period of 36 thousand years.
The base used software - a теория graphs, through which scientists have conducted an analysis of hundreds of web pages devoted to "Star Wars." This work - demonstration of the new software. It can be used, of course, not only to work with literary works and films. But as the authors of the study - the fans of the world of "Star Wars," and the first major work was done on them.
Moreover, the object of the study is perfect - the universe of the "war" is huge. In addition to 7 different series of films, the plot is complemented by a variety of books and video games that expand the saga and complementary episodes. study was performed using the Signal Processing Laboratory 2 (LTS2) tool led by Professor Vandergheynsta (Vandergheynst).
As mentioned above, in 20 thousand characters involved study. 7500 are important events for the world of "Star Wars." Here in 1367 the Jedi and Sith 724. Heroes are divided into 640 different communities in the 294 planets. An analysis of the 10 largest communities showed an interesting result - as it turned out, 80% of the population "far far away" galaxy is people.
In addition to counting the number of characters and the identification of their belonging to a particular community, the program also shared all temporary basis. The length of time of 36 thousand years has been divided into six main periods: before the Republic, Old Republic, Empire, The Rise of the New Republic, the Jedi Order.
The different colors show the different epochs. Black color - missing values. Red - the era of the Empire (episodes 1, 2, 3). Blue - uprising (episodes 4, 5, 6), green - both era. The second figure shows the same connection, after analysis of communication facilities. The black color was replaced by the blue, as a result of using information about neighboring relations. I>
"In order to somehow streamline the array of data, we have analyzed, studied all the communication of each character. Using the connection between the individual elements, we were able to almost accurately determine which age who applies, even if this information was not available in books or movies, "- said Javier Bresson, member of LTS2 researchers.
According to the developers, their software is able to organize and structure the huge amounts of data, extracting and analyzing numerical data. LTS2 doing something that no human being is capable of. The system allows you to select individual elements of the data array, to identify them, restoring the missing links and information.
