Ice worms - a very strange creatures that live in the ocean

Small and rozovye

The world is full of strange and wonderful forms of life, and live the strangest, undoubtedly, in the ocean. Some time ago, scientists have discovered microbes that feed on crude oil that seeps from the ocean floor, and now they have found an even more bizarre little worms.

So-called ice worms were found at a depth of about 500 meters. In the very depths there is nothing strange: there are species that live deeper under water, but the habitat of worms at the same time is a source of food for them, and that this is unusual.

Ice worms live in the structure, called a hydrate, which is a block of frozen methane. Methane bubbles formed on the bottom of the ocean, and at such a pressure and temperature of gas freezes. This family is living the frozen gas, bacteria feeding on the hydrocarbons - that these bacteria and attract the ice worms, as the worms eat them.

Little pink worms spend their two-week lives, digging a small hole in the methane ice to reach the bacteria. Then the worms multiply and die, the offspring grows, and the cycle begins again.
