Car predicts the driver's actions for 4 seconds before the maneuver

While cars have not learned to drive themselves, but able to help the owner . Researchers at Cornell University are working on a system that can predict the actions of the driver in order to avoid mistakes. To do this, the computer monitors the turn of the head, in the photo below the system considered the greatest probability of turning left.

Security systems of modern cars to monitor the movements of the vehicle and warns of the dangers rebuild. But the warning sounds too late - even during the most action of the driver.

System, developed by scientists from Cornell University , consists of a central computer, the camera inside the car, aimed on the face of the driver, an external camera or radar, is determined by other road users. It determines whether the driver will turn right or left, rebuilt in another lane or continue straight ahead.

When the system determines the intended effect as unsafe, it warns about this: for example, when danger lurks on the left, then the system will notify about it the vibration in the left side of the steering wheel or seat. Working with maps and GPS will prevent driver leaving on a one way street.

To train the computer to determine the intentions of the driver, the scientists recorded as 10 drivers drive on the highway and in the city for two months. With the Face Detection function it monitors the position of the head and is associated with this action turns and lane changes.

The accuracy of determining the intentions of the driver was 77, 4 percent, and the forecast was made in 3, 53 seconds before the maneuver - those few seconds can save lives, the researchers note.

The study found deficiencies in the system. 6% of the time for the parties to follow the drivers was impossible, since it prevented the lighting or shadows. Communication with passengers affects the accuracy of the forecast. Sometimes a driver behaves differently in the same situation - does not turn his head to the side, because I already know what to do next, or monitors the road only with the eyes. To address the shortcomings in the future may add tracking eye movement, tactile sensors on the steering wheel and pressure sensors on the pedal.
