San Marino is one of the smallest countries in the world and the oldest state in Europe. It is surrounded by the territory of Italy, 80% of San Marino up rock formations and on an area 60.6 square kilometers is home to only 32,000 people.
According to legend, in 301 AD, a Christian saint from the island of Rab in the Adriatic Sea (present-day Croatia), a stonemason named Marin took refuge on top of Mount Titano.
