Matua - a small island located in the heart of the Kuril chain. During the Great Patriotic War, the Japanese turned it into an impregnable fortress, planning to use as a springboard for war with the Soviet Union. War actually began, but in 1945, 3811 Japanese soldiers and officers "valiantly" surrendered 40 Soviet border guards.
