giant hand in the Atacama Desert

Giant hand in the Atacama Desert, which rises out of the ground. She reminds the remains of an ancient civilization, but in fact, it is quite modern sculpture.

It was created by Chilean artist Mario Irarrasabalem called "Mano del Desierto". This work of art in honor of the victims of injustice and torture during the military regime in Chile.

11-meter high sculpture is made of iron and cement. Grand opening was held March 28, 1992. It is located 75 kilometers south of Antofagasta, and 350 meters from the fifth highway that crosses the plateau of the Atacama Desert. For many years this place has a huge hit with tourists traveling on the highway №5, which is part of the Pan-American Highway. Unfortunately, the sculpture has become a target for graffiti, therefore requires constant maintenance.

Irarrasabal taught philosophy and art at the University of Notre Dame, USA. Then studied the works of German sculptor Otto Valdemar in West Berlin. Mario has a few of these giant hands around the world. One of the sculptures located on the beach in Uruguay. The other hand, came out of the ground in 1987 in the park Juan Carlos in Madrid.
